In the article by Gonzalez, Stein, and Shannonhouse (2012) qualitative interviews were performed to study the Latino or Latina adolescents and their future goals. The research question aims to understand the aspirations of the adolescents and how they would describe their hopes for their future as well as any barriers identified that would inhibit them from reaching those goals. The research question identified begins with “How?” meeting the criteria of the checklist. The research question was also stated multiple times throughout the article; it identifies with the design of the study as well as method chosen for the collection of data. A consensual qualitative research (CQR) was used for the interview and several questions were formed as part of the protocol that were open-ended and used exploratory verbs to identify outcomes. Conversations were recorded with the participants in this study who were tenth graders and the interviews were conducted via phone. A coding team was also used to review and critique the data from the interviews.
The qualitative research approach that is used in this study I believe to be participatory action research (PAR). Babbie (2017) identifies that with PAR approach, the researcher serves as a resource for groups who are at a disadvantage and gives them a change to identify problems, needs, and aids in helping the groups take action for their interests and aims. In this study by Gonzalez, et.al. (2012), the researchers helped the adolescents in understanding their goals and aims by showing them the results and helping create knowledge. Throughout this study, there is good alignment between the framework of the study, the problem, the research question, the purpose of the study, and the research design.
