Research Paper

Instructions
Study the photograph in person for at least 10 minutes.  Get close to study the details (still respecting the gallery rules).  Use a pencil to make notes about everything you see. Write down information you need to include (see below).  Don’t depend on looking at the snapshot later, as it will not be the same.
When you get home, use your notes to write a 2-3 page image analysis.  Please include all the information shown below, and follow the guidelines.
What to write

A citation for the photograph (write it yourself).

Provide the artist’s name (last name, first name), the title of the artwork in italics, the date of creation, and medium, then location.
Example: Goya, Francisco. The Family of Charles IV. 1800, lithograph, Museo del Prado, Madrid.

Describe the photograph in regard to connotation.

Describe what the photograph communicates. (hint: what are the ideas, meaning, topics, things, feelings, overall impressions, etc?)
Describe how the photograph communicates. (hint: how do the choices of composition, objects, color, context, presentation, medium, etc. communicate the ideas?  Example: The irregular vertical lines contribute to a feeling of excitement and movement.)

Describe the historic context of the photograph.

How was this photograph important in the context of the time it was made, and now? (hint: what were the social or political motivations?)
If the technique is different from what was common at the time it was made, discuss why that is important.
