12 Angry Men Writing Assignment (100 points)

You will see a lot of psychological phenomena exhibited in the movie 12 Angry Men. Your task for this assignment is to watch the movie, take note of these various psychological phenomena, and then write a cohesive 3-6 page paper discussing the topics you have learned in this class.

Pick three topics and write a paper in which you relate it to the movie 12 Angry Men. In your paper, you must tie incidences in the movie to your topics. Also, be sure to use concepts from social psychology to support your theme (such as conformity, aggression, stereotyping and so on). In your examples from the film, describe the relevant social psychological theory or theories, and explain clearly how the examples you have chosen illustrate the theory or research finding. After you described the theme you identified describe the ways we can reduce it. 

More is not better. Be sure to explain each topic, how and when it works, and how your examples illustrate it. 

You should integrate material from textbook and the lectures in your paper. You do not have to cover all of the chapters in your paper. Be sure that the content of the paper is relevant to the topic of social psychology. A well-written paper that does not address the topics discussed in class will not receive a good grade.

You do not need to know the real names of the actors. Just be sure to provide enough information about each person so that we can follow the points you are making. You do not need to provide a reference section for the paper.

Grading Criteria

Your paper will be evaluated with respect to how well you integrate course material with examples from the film. I should be able to tell from your paper that you understand the relevant theory and how it applies to your examples. Just mentioning or listing the concepts is not adequate; you must describe and explain how the concepts apply to the examples you choose. You need to describe the ways we can reduce the effects of the negative social processes (e.g. how to reduce groupthink). 

You will be graded on how well you justify and elaborate (i.e., explain, provide evidence for) your examples and conclusions. Finally, although I generally do not grade on the basis of writing quality, it is hard to appreciate a paper that has not been proofread or that is clearly the first and only draft.

Requirements

Your paper must be typed, double-spaced, 6 pages MAXIMUM (not including the cover page) with at least 1″ margins on all sides, Times New Roman 12 font, and stapled. You are also required to email me a copy of your paper so I can send it though SafeAssign program to make sure that it is not plagiarized. Please, in your cover page provide the title of your paper, your name, and the date. The cover page does not count toward the total. The MINIMUM length for the paper is 3 pages.
