Research is beyond important in the field of criminal justice. It is important because when research is done with integrity and professionally, it can lead to laws that better protect United States citizens. The research can enhance laws already in place and even negate laws that are no longer valid or useful to the modern culture in the United States. The considerations in criminal justice research should be the mental and physical health of any subjects that are used in criminal justice research. When subjects are used, their privacy should be of the utmost importance. Their confidentiality of the subjects should be always kept in mind and at the forefront of any research project. Reciprocity is a must in any research project in any field, including the criminal justice field.
An example of how research makes laws better, is the research done on sex trafficking. The laws have been updated after research done, starting in 2000, leading to new and upgraded laws when it comes to sex trafficking. These new laws have assisted in keeping many people safe and assist them in recovery when a victim is recovered. Research can bring to light crimes, like sex trafficking, that have many victims, but not many that survive who care capable of blowing a whistle to stop the crimes, or criminals themselves.
