“It doesn’t matter how good of a leader you are… you just have to kiss a**”.
These are the things I was told about becoming Drum Major. Things that I ignored when I set out to get Drum Major. Finally getting the position was the most meaningful thing knowing that I got the position on my own merit.
I was lucky enough to join marching band two years earlier than most people at my school because the teachers knew me from a summer camp I went to and wanted me to play with the high schoolers. After being in the band for two years I told one of the teachers that recruited me that I wanted to be the Drum Major one day and he responded with “you know I’m on the board that picks the Drum Major you will never be Drum Major”. However, I did not let that get to me and I continued on my path to reach my goal. I started by being a leader in my section, helping others with complex parts. For example, one of the people in my section was having difficulty getting this rhythm he had and I continued to help him weak after week until he eventually got the rhythm down. I then auditioned to be a Field Major junior, which was another leadership position in our band, and got it. At the same time one of my close friends got Drum Major and when I told her I wanted to be the Drum Major next year she told me that “It doesn’t matter how good of a leader you are… you just have to kiss a**”. However, that’s not how I wanted to get the position I wanted to earn it. Luckily being Field Major made it easier to be a leader and show an example to others. I got to help out with other sections besides just percussion, I led the stretches, and I got to represent the band at the competitions. 
Once you get in the habit of helping people, you get pretty good at finding situations where you can help others.
