When I reflect upon the students that I teach I realize I have very little in common with them collectively. My students are middle school students, mostly male, mostly Hispanic or African american and most do not enjoy math. I our worlds are very different. This affects my teaching because I want them to be engaged in their learning, so I need to make math relevant to them or interesting for them. It impacts our interactions because we have very little in common so I need to make an effort to understand them on some level for there to be a connection.
My big “aha” is actually thinking about my students and how very different they are from me based on the diversity worksheet. I also realize that most people have probably at some time felt as if they did not belong for whatever reason. If I think back to one of those times it helps me remember that everyone wants to feel wanted, needed and valued which is really the basics of inclusion.
