Requirements for Research Paper with Contemporary Issue and Personal Reflection

1.)10 pages of text.

2.) The research portion of your paper should be at least 5 pages and include a minimum of 5 scholarly sources and one primary source for the historical period. There is no maximum on the total number of sources you use

3.) The contemporary issue should be at least 3-4 pages and use at least 3 sources (these will be popular sources like newspapers and reliable websites) and the personal connection should be 1-2 pages.

1.)   It should have 2-3 major arguments.

2.)   The arguments should be organized in a logical and clear structure. Each argument should be differentiated from the others using paragraphs and introductory sentences, aka topic sentences.

3.)   Each argument should be clearly explained and have strong examples/evidence, such as a quote from a primary source.

4.)   Do not quote secondary sources, paraphrase and cite the source.  Definitely feature your primary source and quote only your primary source. Use the juiciest quote, one that illustrates your argument! Always introduce the quote first, including who your source is, give the quote, then you must interpret it.

5.)   CITE YOUR SOURCES WITH IN-TEXT CITATIONS! Every piece of information must be cited, except intro, conclusion and your interpretation of primary documents.  I do not give you credit for information that is not cited.

6.)   When you are done writing your arguments, write an introduction that includes a working thesis and a summary of your arguments. You do not need to include a conclusion in this draft.

7.)   Number the pages of your paper—this is essential!

The 20th century reflects a pattern of U.S. immigration policy based on the needs of U.S. industries for cheap labor that is then reversed when the economy declines, leading to mass scale repatriation and deportation.   The severe economic crisis of the 1930s Depression led to Mexican immigrants being scapegoated as responsible for the crisis. They were pressured and sometimes rounded up and forced to leave by the thousands.  This period is known as the repatriation.
