Students are required to submitted an annotated bibliography on their final essay topic. First select the topic from the choices in the final essay assignment (module 3). Topic Choices:

After selecting the topic students must do the following:
I. Topic Selection- in 3-4 sentences discuss why you selected this particular topic and what you hope to learn from your research.
II. Primary Source (1 source minimum)- in 3-4 sentences explain why this is a primary source, why you selected this particular source, and how you plan to use it in your essay. Note a primary source is a first person account of an event, not someone’s interpretation of an event. It will have been written at the time the event occurred. The source must be formatted correctly in MLA format.
III. Secondary Sources(4)- for EACH source- in 3-4 sentence discuss why you selected the source and how you will use it in your essay. All sources must be formatted correctly in MLA format. Secondary sources must be college level academic sources. You may Not use wikipedia, weebly.com, history.com, sparknotes, history.org, Encyclopedias of any kind, anything that says college notes, just to name a few. The secondary sources must be from the VC library online data bases — Academic Search Complete or JSTOR or approved by the instructor.

Topic Selection
Prison and Asylum Reform in the 19th century is intriguing such that the brutal and arbitrary treatment was very common, and can still be seen in these facilities in today’s society. Exploring this reform is interesting since it marks some of the first steps away from barbaric imprisonment and treatment. I am hoping to learn more of a topic that I have not written of or researched before.

The address by Dorothea Dix that she used for the Legislature of Massachusetts in 1843 regarding inhumane conditions of imprisoned peoples. Lays out specific conditions noted in Dix’s Journal and calls on Legislature to aid these issues. This will be a primary source whereas it is a direct script from the Asylum Reform period up to 1865.

This source is very descriptive and thorough. It describes a range of topics regarding Asylums in the 1840’s including creation and funding, as well as early development and living conditions. It also discusses the founding of the Association of Medical Superintendents of American Institutions for the Insane (AMSAII) in 1844. It includes extensive examples including daily events logged describing what a 19th centry asylum would have been like, touching on how the cause of insanity was perceived at this time. There are also references to Dorothea Dix and the course of reformation at this time.
Clark, Emily. Mad Literature: Insane Asylums in Nineteenth Century America. Arizona Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies, 2015.
This article begins by describing how well documented the conditions of mental asylums in early America were. Also going into media portrayals and social views of institutionalized peoples among society, explaining how, often, released patients would “expose” the wrongdoings inside the institutions themselves. It discusses the rise for the need of these asylums among the 18th century and that most of the people that needed this kind of care were often kept shut away in “almshouses, poor houses, jails, and hospitals for much of the 18th century and early 19th century. References to “The Opal”, a succesful periodical written between the years of 1851-1860 by a group of patients at a particular asylum and explains certain changes in the world of mental health such as the development of moral treatment.

This article begins by stating basic faults in the mental health system, with references to a Mrs. Elizabeth Packard, who was forcibly placed in an asylum without question by request from her husband. It discusses women’s roles in the world of psychiatry in the early 19th century were next to nothing. It also discusses the question of patient restraint in the 18th century.

This article sheds light on mid-period asylum era, discussing how populations for these places greatly increased in the 19th century, the Lunacy Act of 1845, and diagnosis only being one of either Mania, Dementia or Melancholia and how it was interpreted. Includes data tables that detailed lengths of stays, outcomes at either discharge or death, categories of illnesses, and other scientific charting tables.
