About 10 years ago I worked on a political campaign for governor of New Jersey. I started as an intern but was eventually hired to be the assistant director of compliance. I choose to appraise this job using the Hackman and Oldham’s five core job dimensions due to the autonomy and feedback I received while working there. An assistant director of compliance is basically a glorified accountant on a political campaign. My job was to keep track of all expenses incurred by the campaign and its staff as well as all of the contributions. The first part of this job was pretty straightforward and I was given a lot of autonomy in this area. As long as the campaign bank account and the QuickBooks equaled out, the director of compliance didn’t care too much as to how I kept records of all the transactions. The second part of this job was much more difficult. Campaign contributions came in from everywhere and there are very specific laws as to who and how much can be donated. While I was given some leeway in keeping track of these donations, the director of compliance was always giving me feedback on how I was doing my job. Usually the feedback was positive, but at times it wasn’t. Regardless of the tone of the feedback, just the knowledge received from these encounters was priceless and was instrumental in helping me feel motivated in my job.
