1. Glenn- Explain what it means to be ethical as it relates to personal, academic, and professional growth?
On a personal level, I live following Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics. I believe in the golden rule and believe that you should treat others as you would like to be treated. I am a true humanitarian at heart and consider how my actions will affect those around me. I also think that life is a balancing act. We live evaluating every situation and then trying to find the best virtues to use. For example, some things require us to use bravery while other situations require us to be cautious. Life is a struggle of finding a balance between two ends.
Academically, being ethical means learning because it has value to me. I think it is important to learn not just for the sake of a grade or a degree. Knowledge should lead to wisdom and this is something that can only come from realizing that what you learn is useful and can be applied. I also believe that being ethical academically means that you realize that you will forever be a learner and that no one can be an expert in anything because new knowledge always surfaces. So, academically, being ethical means being open to the views and opinions of others.
Professionally, being ethical means working with others and not against them. I think that with every job there must be teamwork. It can be a counselor and a client, a teacher and a student, or an accountant and a corporation; but in each situation, there is an effort on two parties to get a job done. It means working collaboratively and being understanding about the other person or people involved. Everyone has different perspectives and each should be considered and respected.
Provide at least one ethical dilemma you have encountered, and describe how the issue was resolved.
Personally, I think we face ethical dilemmas every day of our lives. Just getting up and going to work is an ethical dilemma because that means that you are leaving your family and making their needs secondary to the need for self-fulfillment and the need for making money.
Describe how your general education courses have influenced your ethical values.
The Ethics course I had has influenced my ethical values because it helped me to gain a look at myself and my interpersonal relationships. It taught me to define what I believe in and allowed me to express how I feel. I also think that my logic course has helped me a great deal to form an opinion and to argue a point. Lastly, I think that my psychology classes have helped me to understand information processing and to develop an understanding of others. All of these things have helped me to become ethically aware.
2. Explain what it means to be ethical as it relates to personal, academic, and professional growth.
Ethics is basically making the conscious decision between right and wrong in all aspects of life. Although different circumstances may present different interpretations of this in various people, we follow regulations, moral guidelines, and laws to help us find the right path. In a personal perspective, ethics involves being faithful, honest, and transparent to those around you and when raising a family. For academics, honesty and putting in your own hard work are examples of ethics. Professionally, ethics involve doing the right thing, following rules, regulations and policy, and being honest. In all aspects, ethics help us to do the right thing, be honest with ourselves and others, and standing up and taking action when something isn’t right and causing harm to others.
Provide at least one ethical dilemma you have encountered, and describe how the issue was resolved.
“In a modern society, the normative demands from their profession rather than those on individual virtue becomes the key concept of modern ethics” (Gong & Zhang, 2010, p.257). I think we have all had ethical dilemmas at some point in our lives. One ethical dilemma that I am currently struggling with is working in a hospital during this COVID-19 pandemic, knowing that I entered healthcare in order to care for others, yet fearful for what could result if I either become sick myself, or transmit this illness to my family because of my work.
I continually remind myself of my dedication to others while establishing strict rules for my family and myself to adhere to in regards to preventative measures to stay as safe as possible. Additionally, I have re-purposed our casita at home in case I need to quarantine myself and not expose my family as we see increased COVID cases at work. Finally, I have put a lot of focus at work on educating my staff and stressing CDC safety measures so that we are all taking safety precautions seriously, while supporting and encouraging my team to stay strong and work together in providing the medical service our patients require and deserve.
Describe how your general education courses have influenced your ethical values.
I feel that going back to school as an adult with a family, career and many other responsibilities has influenced my ethical values by having to really work hard to incorporate and meet not only the criteria for school but, also the high standards I expect from myself and want to instill to my children that hard work equals better things in life. All of the numerous papers I have written by properly citing references in the last year has reminded me of the importance of one’s own work and the recognition one should receive for the effort they put forth. Additionally, I have found the ability to incorporate so much of my learning from these courses into the workplace, by helping others and focusing on the greater good.
