Suppose you just received a phone call about your dream job, and the company would like to invite you to an interview. Conduct initial research about the company and determine what types of things you want to know about the company and/or the job. Plus, what types of things do you want the company to know about you? What types of questions would you like to ask the company, and why? What types of questions do you hope the company asks you, and why? Be sure to use your critical-thinking skills for this discussion.
ANSWER THE ABOVE QUESTION AND THEN REPLY TO MY CLASSMATE RESPONSE TO THE ABOVE QUESTIONS AND EXPLAIN WHY YOU AGREE? (A MINIMUM OF 150 WORDS EACH)
CLASSMATE’ RESPONSE
Whenever I am recruited by an employer, I immediately research the company for several factors.
a) Employee reviews via sites like Indeed and Glassdoor
b) Company Performance Over Time
c) What type of product the company makes or service they provide
d) Consumer feedback
e) I research the salaries reported for the job I am considering and compare to other jobs in the market
Questions that I ask in an interview are what a typical day in the position looks like. I ask what the size of the team is and how it is comprised. I ask what the general operating hours and expectations for attendance are (is it a flexible schedule or a fixed one). I ask about any benefits available to employees as the result of employment. Equally important to me, I ask about the company’s relationship to their community and the impact operations have. I like to be involved with an organization that supports the communities they serve outside of just providing employment. I also ask questions to decipher what the overall company culture is. Is it well defined, or in development?
The questions I appreciate most in an interview are those involving giving an example where I performed a specific skill during a particular situation. How I deal with conflict, how I would address quality issues or conflicts regarding coworkers. I have never appreciated personal questions such as a “what are your hobbies?” “what do you like to do in your spare time?”
Presenting me with a general predicament and asking me to tell a story around how I previously accomplished a goal gives an employer a clear picture not only in how I problem solve, but also how that style will conflict or match well with the current team. It helps me and the hiring manager determine if I do in fact have the skills to perform the job and if not, do I possess at least enough knowledge to develop those skills practically.
