1.   What is Progressivism?  (Give 2 examples of Progressive thought in the early 1900s) What is the difference between “civic reform,” “political reform” and “moral 
reform?”  What was meant by the term “environmentalism” in the early 20th century?? Who was Jane Addams?  What was her contribution to Chicago History? Please detail 2 interesting things about her and the Hull House.

2.   Please discuss how World War 1 affected Chicago.  Why was the city in 
disagreement about who to support during the war?  In what ways was Chicago 
affected by the war (give 3 examples)? Why was 1919 a significant year in Chicago history? (List 3 reasons).

3.   Discuss Chicago’s significance during the Prohibition Era.  Who was “Big Bill” 
Thompson and give three examples from his time as mayor?  Who was Al Capone, how did he come to power?  What was the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre and why did this event help change public opinion against the gangsters? 

4.   What was the Great Migration?  Why did the circumstances in World History and American history make 1900-1920 & 1940-1950 a ripe time for African Americans to migrate to Chicago?  What were some specific problems that African Americans faced in Chicago during the first half of the 20 th Century (give 3 examples)?

5.   What was the Great Depression? Describe how Chicago was affected by the Great Depression (be specific and use at least 4 examples). What was Cermack’s contributions to the city and government?  In what ways did Chicago try to deal/cope with the Great Depression (give 3 examples). How was Chicago affected by World War 2?

6.   Describe Chicago’s political machine… Why was it so effective?  What methods did Mayor Daley use to wield his power?  What were some of his achievements for the city? (list at least 3) On what issues did Daley fail and why? Discuss Martin Luther King’s visit to Chicago and his relationship with Mayor Daley.  Why was 1968 such a significant year in Chicago history?
