Wow! We are on our 7th week! One more week and we are done with this class. I feel like I have learned a lot from the course materials and from all of you. This week we have been tasked with answering the following:
As domestic terrorism incidents continue to happen, how can law enforcement agencies prevent, prepare, and respond to the potential for domestic terrorism? What type of intelligence should be shared with the public in trying to prevent or gain additional information of potential incidents?
The Department of Homeland Security should continue pushing its different campaigns such as If You See Something Say Something ®, Stop. Think. Connect, Ready, and Citizen Corps (DHS, 2018) through public events, school open houses, assemblies or even just giving it to children at schools to bring home and have their parents, guardians, etc. read it as well as through multiple media outlets (i.e. social media, television announcements, radio announcements, Internet announcements, etc.) to ensure maximum population reach. I have read through the different campaigns and they offer a lot of valuable information that the public should know and understand. By law enforcement agencies sharing this type of information through the campaigns as well as analyzed products of past crimes (such as indicators, progression of events, etc) that could inform the public of past events. By doing so and not letting the media give their own analysis and bias about events, people will be able to better understand how law enforcement agencies think and handle these types of events. It can also build trust between the communities and police to better share information thus helping agencies push relevant information to the fusion centers to be shared with upper echelon governments (state and federal). This way, individuals can obtain information concerning statistics of domestic terrorism related events, learn to recognize terrorist-like behavior and know how to properly report it, know how to prepare and respond to various types of emergencies and understand cyber-attacks as well. By doing all of these, law enforcement agencies can prepare and prevent terrorist attacks within the homeland and be able to respond to suspicious activity that could lead to an attack. Law enforcement agencies can better respond to terrorist related criminal activities by assessing risk and categorize the most to least critical infrastructure that could be targeted (USDOJ, 2005).
