Each student will reflect on the BP oil spill as it relates to the global supply chain – Examine the use of current transportation economic situations such as the 2010 BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in the internet exercise discussion board.

Student Justin

For those of you who don’t know, in 2010 BP had a terrible oil spill that polluted the Gulf Coast and killed a lot of the marine biology in the area. For almost 90 days, gallons upon gallons of oil was dumped into the water. BP ended up losing almost 20 billion dollars in both oil loss and environmental fines.
Every part of that company felt shockwaves from the incident. Up top, the CEO of the company became under fire for something that he had no hand. He oversees the company so when the sailing is good, there are no complaints. But when you’re the head of a company that impacted multiple communities with a disastrous incident, you tend to get some heat from it. I visited Gulfport, MS after this incident happened and the town was completely affected by the incident. The tourist industry was at an all-time low because the beaches were disgusting. Nobody wants to visit an area where you look out in the water and see the water is jet black and filled with trash. The city felt the repercussions of this incident for years and are just starting to get over the incident.
So not only was the environment affected as was the tourist industry but also the actual BP company itself. This incident is going to be synonymous with the company and it will never be seen the same again. Everyone was affected by this incident and the oil supplies were no different. Nobody in the company was safe from the criticism.

Student Kevin

11 workers were killed and 16 others injured on Deep Water Horizon oil rig on April 20th, 2011, this incident allowed millions of gallons of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico over 87 days.  Those who were responsible for the accident was BP, rig operator Transocean and Halliburton. The impact that BP suffered was a result of the incident range, was a loss of billions of dollars, their stocks dropped 40 percent, along with 18 billion in fines. This was the largest settlement in United States history. For those who suffered tremendously caused by accident were fisherman, the shipping industries, and tourism. The Louisana coast ecologically diaster leaving 4.2 million gallons of crude oil will leave in an impact of generations to come, as well as the economic impact that will be felt. This disaster gulf coast destroyed the wildlife, tourism and natural beauty of gulf will never be the same. While watching the news and stuff, you hear about the underlying issues and the causes but there something that people overlooked, and those who took a big hit was transportation in and out of the Gulf. Ships could not get in; trucks couldn’t deliver cause ships couldn’t get in. Deep Horizon did leave a negative impact on some industries, at the same time some industries were able to thrive. It wasn’t only the coastal states that were affected by the spill but as the United States as a whole. Many economic lessons have been learned as result of the spill; specific laws are put in place when dealing with offshore oil drillers. I honestly believe that BP was let off easy
