From the beginning to the end of the story, the main character experiences her time when she was changing from child to woman. Growing up during the Great Depression in impoverished rural of Maryland, her family had been living through poverty and financial struggles.
She was fourteen going on fifteen by that time so she understood everything her family or her neighbors had been through.
