body paragraph and closing

Graded Assignments
You must complete only one graded assignment and send it to your instructor for a grade.
Note: You must complete your journal entry for this lesson; however, send your third collection of journals (journals from Lessons 9-12) in Lesson 12.
Lesson 11 Assignment: Writing the Body Paragraph (30 points)

Create one body paragraph to follow the introduction that you wrote for Assignment 10. It is important to note that if you were developing a full five-paragraph essay, you would write three body paragraphs, one for each of the three points in your thesis statement. Here, however, you will only be required to develop the first supporting point from your thesis statement.

Before you begin this assignment, reread your introductory paragraph from Assignment 10. Create a strong topic sentence to direct your body paragraph. Remember that this body paragraph must flow smoothly from your introduction.

As you create your body paragraph, use the scoring rubric below as a checklist to ensure you have all the necessary components to your paragraph. Remember to use quotation marks, if necessary, when using a source to support your body paragraph. List any sources at the bottom of the page.
Submit the introduction that you wrote for Assignment 10 along with your body paragraph. Although you are only being graded on the body paragraph, you must make any necessary changes to the introduction based on your instructor’s feedback. Your instructor will be looking for a strong connection between the topic sentence of your body paragraph and the first supporting point from your thesis statement, which facilitates seamless movement from your introduction to the body of your essay.

Your body will be scored using the following rubric:
The Body Paragraph Scoring Rubric
The body paragraph has a strong topic sentence that supports the thesis statement.
5 points
The body paragraph has strong, vivid, detailed support.

Lesson 12 Assignment: Writing the Conclusion Paragraph

Create a conclusion to follow the introduction and body paragraphs that you wrote for Assignments 10 and 11. It is important to note that if you were developing a full five-paragraph essay, you would have written three body paragraphs, one for each of the three points in your thesis statement. Write your conclusion as if you had written three body paragraphs. In other words, summarize your thesis and all three supporting points.

Note – Before you begin this assignment, reread your introductory paragraph from Assignment 10 so that you can create a strong topic sentence that restates your thesis and supporting points in a fresh way.

As you create your conclusion, use the scoring rubric below as a checklist to ensure you have all the necessary components to your paragraph.
Submit your introduction and body paragraph along with this conclusion. Although you are only being graded on your conclusion, you must make any necessary changes to your introductory and body paragraphs based on your instructor’s feedback. Your instructor will be looking for cohesiveness and unity throughout your essay.

Your conclusion will be scored using the following rubric:
Conclusion Scoring Rubric
The first sentence of the conclusion is a broad, thesis-level statement.
5 points
The overall length of the conclusion is short — about 5-7 sentences.
5 points
The conclusion has no new information introduced.
5 points
The last sentence in the conclusion is satisfying and final-sounding.
5 points
